HISTORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI MEMORIAL

The construction of the Gandhi Memorial began on January 30, 1952, exactly four years after Mahatma Gandhi's assassination, and it was completed in 1956. The memorial was built to commemorate Mahatma Gandhi's historic visit to Kanyakumari in 1925 and again in 1937. During these visits, he meditated and sought inspiration on the rocky shores of Kanyakumari. The memorial was designed in a unique architectural style that combines elements of various Indian architectural traditions. Its central structure resembles an Oriya-style temple, and the architecture reflects the cultural diversity and unity of India. Inside the memorial, there is a bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi in a sitting posture. The statue depicts him with his legs crossed and a serene expression on his face. The memorial also houses a black stone slab marking the spot where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were kept before immersion in the sea after his death. This spot holds great significance for visitors. The memorial was inaugurated by then-President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, on February 1, 1956.
