Sree Adi Kesava Perumal Temple

HISTORY

The temple has a rich history and is believed to have been constructed during the reign of the Chola family, which ruled over parts of South India between the 9th and 13th centuries. Over time, various rulers and dynasties, including the Pandya and Nayak kingdoms, contributed to the temple’s expansion and renovation. It was constructed during the reign of Marthanda Varma, the Maharaja of Travancore. Marthanda Varma, who is credited with unifying various princely states in the region to form Travancore, was a devout follower of Lord Padmanabha (another form of Lord Vishnu). He was instrumental in the expansion and renovation of this temple.

DEITY

The primary deity of the Adi Kesava Perumal Temple is Lord Adi Kesava Perumal, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Inside the sannidhi, Lord Adi Kesava Perumal reclines on a snake couch, and his divine presence is revealed through three doors. Additionally, Lord Shiva can also be seen in close proximity to Lord Adi Kesava Perumal within the sacred sanctum.

ARCHITECTURE

The temple showcases the traditional Dravidian architectural style, characterized by intricate stone carvings, colorful sculptures, and a towering gopuram (entrance tower) at the entrance. The temple is encircled by a towering thirty-feet-high fort wall, and the outer corridor is supported by 224 stone pillars. The Sree Adi Kesava Perumal Temple is renowned for its stunning architectural design. The temple complex also includes a spacious courtyard and a sanctum sanctorum where the main deity, Lord Adi Kesava, is enshrined.

Festival: The Adi Kesava Perumal Temple celebrates several festivals and rituals throughout the year, including Vaikunta Ekadashi, Krishna Jayanti (Janmashtami), and the annual Brahmotsavam festival, during which the temple deities are taken out in a grand procession.
